We like to show case our cattle, and bench mark them against the cattle of our peers. Additionally, we enjoy supporting our local shows. In 2016 Riverslea were very excited to come away with Champion Senior Bull and Reserve Champion Junior Bull in the Santa Gertrudis Ring at Inverell Show. We also had an excellent day out at Moree - winning Champion Senior Bull with Riverslea King Kong (PS) who went onto win Champion Senior Interbreed Bull. Riverslea King Julian (P) impressed again by taking out Reserve Champion Junior Bull. The Kings joined forces to also win Interbreed Pair of Bulls! Another sucessful day at Inverell 2017 with Champion Junior SG Bull Riverslea Majak (P), Reserve to Riverslea Mambo (PS). Champion Senior Bull & Grand Champion SG to Riverslea Legend (P).

Riverslea Reduction Sale ~ 99.6% clearance
What a great sale. We sincerely thank the many people who came and supported the sale - stud breeders from Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania. Repeat and new customers. Underbidders. Local, and not so local, commercial buyers. The Elders agents from Inverell (especially Dick Gleeson & Scott Fitzgerald), and Stud Stock Auctioneer - Brian Kennedy. The many people who just came along in support. A very big thank you.
Heifers sold to a top of $5,500 twice - both going to Nioa Santa Gertrudis Stud in Allora. Bulls selling to a top of $13,500 to Bullamakinka Santa Stud in Qld. Volume buyers included Ryalsea Santa Stud, Ercouldine with 6 lots, Dangarfield Santa Stud took home 11 lots, Peter Stevenson Naringalook Santa Stud, and Tony Margan from Lismore added 9 females to his herd.
1 week old Riverslea Krypton (P) enjoying a drink.
We sincerely wish all our customers, suppliers and supporters a really successful 2015. With the Australian dollar heading south, useful rains across most of the drought affected areas, a shortage of cattle numbers.....we reckon 2015 will be The Year the cattle job turned!
The Riverslea Cattle are enjoying some green feed for the first time in a couple of years. Much more rain is needed yet to get some sub soil moisture and run off into dams, creeks & springs. However, the change in the weather pattern is more than welcomed.
Our commercial cattle are gaining weight rapidly - the Victorian consignment are being finished at Garvan Park Feedlot, whilst the NSW cattle are just enjoying the green grass.
A reminder that we do have select paddock sale bulls available now.

See you there!
Best Beef Field Day
What a fabulous day - we were even treated to great weather. The cattle & the property in Victoria looked tremendous (the results of the best Autumn start - some are saying "in a lifetime"). Burnett Joyce had the crowd riveted with his engaging and super informative talks on Cattle Selection & Cross Breeding. We were so lucky to have such an icon of the beef industry share his knowledge with us all. Terry Farrell was a fabulous guest speaker - educating us all on changes the the MLA grading along with very practical tips for maximising returns. Kelly Payne (MLA) cut up a rump and talked us through cuts & quality - which didn't take long to be put on the BBQ and devoured by a crowd of 60. Mark from Pacific seeds in Hamilton concluded the talks for the day - with many tips for maximising production and profitability in a pasture based system.
Kelly Payne had their attention!

Fantastic Open Day
Visiting early in the day was Frank Bundock. Frank was the lucky winner of the "Win a Pen of Steers" in 2013.
130 mls of glorious rain over 10 days followed by 2 days of sunshine set the scene for a great filed day. Visitors were treated to lines of 'J', 'H' & 'G' heifers as well as mixed age stud cows. Yearling bulls plus stud sires were also penned for inspection. Bulls like Dangarfield Universe (PS) and Diamond H Mindreader (P) attracted plenty of attention and positive comment. Not to be out done the show team looked a picture. Big thank you to Richard Murphy (Bindaree Domestic Beef Sales) who cooked up a mouth watering batch of Scotch Fillet steaks for Dinner.
Howzat - does it again
He's backed up again - 17 month old Riverslea Howzat (PS) won the Champion Junior bull and then took out Grand Champion Santa Bull and Supreme Santa Gertrudis Exhibit at Inverell Show - following up on last fortnights wins at Glen Innes Show.
Howzat is by the super muscle sire Diamond H Mindreader (P) & out of one of our classiest cows Riverslea Destiny (now deceased).

Supporting the Beef Producers of the Future
The Santa Gertrudis Australia Association staged the 19th annual National Junior Show and Youth Camp this week. What a great event, what great kids......Belive us - Agriculture in Australia has a really strong future with these kids waiting in the wings. Riverslea was very proud to provide 9 head of lead cattle for the event (5 stud heifers, 1 stud bulls & 3 poddy calves for the little kids to enjoy). The highlight again was the outstanding temperament of the Riverslea cattle 2 of the youngsters handled & paraded the cattle with broken arms (we are assured all breaks were non-cattle related!).
Riverslea Happi Dayz was sold at the Elite Heifer Auction to long time supporters Ryalsea Santa Gertrudis Stud.
Gordy and Riverslea Jed (P)- getting serious about the show ring.
Taylor doing a great job (even with a broken right hand), with Riverslea Helena (P)

Beef Week Field Day
Cattle farmers took the opportunity to view the 2013 Red Hot sale team. The field day provided an opportunity to inspect the bulls and to question Alan in a relaxed atmosphere. The stud heifers to be offered at the sale generated plenty of interest - they were penned with new stud sire Yarrawonga Able (P) - a powerhouse bull.
The sale team was 100 days off sale day. If you would like a catalogue please contact us and we'll put you on the mailing list.
On Farm Field Day
Thursday 20th June, On Farm at "Fishponds" Gragin Rd Delungra
You know it's a great field day when you struggle to get photos of any ones faces - they are all to busy looking over the rails into the cattle pens. A very satisfying situation!
Over 80 cattle people joined us for our Taste of the Future day....wearing 'A Touch of Red' and enjoying all beef finger foods (some great recipes on the MLA website!).
Yarded cattle included a line up of stud sires, cows and calves, heifers (pure & crossbred) and 8 pens of 2013 sale bulls. Again the comments were all about the great temperament of the cattle (tested out by the many kids with painted faces jumping in the castle), the fertility traits and carcase traits (meat & muscle).
A very enjoyable and worthwhile day - with two farmers exclaiming they couldn't believe it took them a full 3hrs to get right round the yards (suggest they may have pulled up for a couple of quiet beers too!).
Many thanks to all that came and supported our day. We look forward to opening the gates again on Thursday June 20th for the Northern Beef Week Field days.
The results for Santa Gertrudis cattle in the first stage of the RAS Beef Challenge are quite outstanding. With the competition amongst beef breeds in our industry today it is gratifying to see the proven advantage of Santa and Santa cross cattle in the weight gain section. This information backed up by commercial producers that have trialed different breeds on a larger scale and reverted back to Santa bulls confirms the weight gain advantage of using Santa’s.
At the Wilga feedlot at Bellata in the Domestic section that is 70 days on feed with no HGP’s there were 32 pens of 6 head.
In the daily weight gain section Santa’s and their crosses won 8 out of the first 10 places. In the above section for the individual steer Santa’s and their crosses won 9 out of the first 10 places. In the Export section on feed for 100 days there were 21 pens of 6 head.
Again in the daily weight gain Santa’s and their crosses won 5 out of the first 10 places, and in the individual weight gain section Santa’s and their crosses won first and ninth places.
The most interesting point is that the highest weight gain individual steer in the Domestic class was a pure Santa steer gaining 2.56 kilos per day, in the Export class again with a pure Santa steer the gain was 2.79 kilos per day. Here is the proof that Santa cattle have a distinct advantage in weight gain compared to many other breeds, combine this with their adaptability, versatility and the classification system and you are on a winner.
Field Day @ Riverslea Victoria 2nd February

Wendalla Females all the way from WA
In another exciting purchase - Riverslea have secured the top line of females with calves from the renowned Wendalla Santa Gertrudis Stud in WA.
It is with many thanks that the Gould family have given us this opportunity to secure such fantastic females.
The quality, depth of breeding and fantastic temperaments are testament to the careful selection & years of hard work that the Gould's have put into their herd.
We are committed to securing the best genetics in order to breed the best bulls.
Elco Females @ Riverslea
Riverslea Stud is delighted to have secured the top lots at the recent Elco Santa Gertrudis Stud dispersal sale. The line of females with calves at foot will continue to add to our depth & breadth of genetics, especially along the Elco & Auburn lines. These bloodlines will also provide outcross genetics in the future for other stud breeders.
Riverslea Commercial Cattle - Look Great Too!
Pictured is one of Amy Coplands' Santa Gertrudis Heifer calves - by Riverslea Digger (poll). Amy purchased a neat line of commercial heifers from Riverslea. She's understandably delighted with the progeny!
In the background are Santa x Angus calves from the Copland family Angus herd ... They are now using Santa Gertrudis Bull - Riverslea Falcon ... Amy tells us "we're all impressed with how he is turning out and the calves he's producing."
Check out the gestation calendar on the stud page. It's a really handy tool to calculate joining and calving dates
2015 Bulls - in progress NOW!
Yarrawonga Astro (POLL) was selected for these females in part - to keep frames size, maintain terrific temperament and improve their coats.
The decisions we make now - will be reflected in our 2015 offering of sale bulls. Our breeding program incorporates both Art & Science, always reflecting industry needs. We aim to continuously improve the stud herd and invest heavily in diverse genetics that will add quality. We single sire mate every female and she is expected to breed better than herself. Each heifer, cow & calf is individually critically examined, prior to a bull being selected for her: including the performance of her previous progeny, weaning weights, calving intervals, frame score, poll genetics, muscling and maturing patterns. The Santa Gertrudis Classification system is fully embraced at Riverslea - it is an independent examination of every breeding animal over the age of 15 months. The selected stud cattle cattle are branded with an 'S' - your assurance of quality!
With all that to do - it is time to get away from the computer & get back down the cattle yards!

"The 22 heifers I purchased from your sale that were pregnancy tested in calf to Riverslea bulls have all calved down. Didn't even look like having to help any of them. I've now got 22 magnificent units running around the paddock."

DPI Research Confirms What We've Been Breeding & Selecting For...
DPI research conducted by PhD student Linda Cafe, has now scientifically proven what we've been breeding, selecting cattle, and managing our farms for. Cattle that are calmer "grow more quickly than temperamental ones and produce larger, better finished carcases with more tender meat."
We'll also add that they are easier and safer to handle than temperamental cattle!

Customer Catch Up - II
Alan had the pleasure to catch up with Allan Jobling at his farm in Macorna. Allan purchased herd Bull Riverslea Craftsman from one of our Beef Week field days. Look at the growth and quality of the crossbred calves....!

Customer Catch Up
Alan recently had a whirlwind trip to catch up with some customers. First property visit was Rosevale, home to Brett & Jacinta Singe. The Singe family purchased a bull from Riverslea at the Finley sale. They are using him over pure and cross bred females, with the aim of increasing the quality and depth of their herd - they're getting those results plus more.
Next visit was to Southern Star Santa Gertrudis Stud NSW. Alan & Claire McCormack purchased a stud bull and heifers from Riverslea. Riverslea Deputy was Champion Junior bull at National Beef 2010. He is doing the job for them with upgrading their pure Santa Gertrudis herd. Alan aims to breed his own bulls down the track and use them over his Angus herd to produce bullocks for the export market.
Final visit was at the foot hills of the snow covered Mount Beauty. What a spectacular spot! Will and Monica Hood are looking to upgrade their Santa Gertrudis herd. They purchased heifers from Riverslea as well as stud bull Riverslea Crusader. Crusader is also used over their Hereford cows with great success. Riverslea will hold a field day in conjunction with the Hood family in Autumn in 2013 to show case the Santa Gertrudis breed.
